CONTROVERSIES IN CONTEMPORARY KOREA 01:574:390

Course Description:

     This Course examines a number of key controversies in contemporary Korea (South and North). We will examine such topics as the Japanese empire and comfort women, North Korea and human rights, China and K-pop, nationalism and history writing, the Korean War, military junta governments and authoritarianism, violence and democratization, nuclear power and environmental policy etc. Course requirements include weekly reading (approx. 20-25 pages) assignments, weekly writing (2 pages) assignments, active participation in discussion, and a creative media project. There are no quizzes or exams for this Course.

Asia-Pacific in Cross-Cultural Perspective :01:098:345

Course Description:

This course explores the social, cultural, and political interactions in the Asia-PacificThis course explores the social, cultural, and political interactions in the Asia-Pacificregion from the late nineteenth century to the present from a cross-culturalperspective. Students will gain “alternative” perspectives and learn to criticallyexamine topics on early U.S.-Asia encounters (immigrants, students, embassies),colonialism, and war and its legacies through exposure to multiple points of view: the“voices” or contemporaneous literary works and primary sources (in translation),museums and sites where the experiences are remembered and told, and faculty andstudents of a Japanese university. The course will culminate with joint online sessionswith Professor Keiji Nakatsuji’s class at Ritsumeikan University, Kyoto, during the finalmonth of the semester. Guest lecturers will be invited for selected topics.
