The department offers major programs in Chinese and in East Asian Languages and Area Studies—with concentrations in Chinese, Japanese, or Korean, and minor programs in Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Asian Studies.
Our Mission: We have created an exceptional learning environment for the study of Chinese, Japanese, and Korean languages and cultures, and recently added Filipino and Vietnamese to our language offerings. Our faculty members conduct cutting-edge research that is transforming the fields of Chinese, Japanese, and Korean Studies in North America and internationally.
Our Courses: We provide the richest and most substantial offering of courses on East Asia in the State of New Jersey.
Our Signature Course: Among our most exciting course offerings is the "Global East Asia" Signature Course. Its popularity clearly demonstrates that Rutgers students increasingly perceive East Asia to be a region of key importance to their futures, and thus a place they want to engage with and understand thoroughly.
Our Byrne Seminars: Designed for incoming first-year students, our department faculty offer one-credit Byrne Seminars as a way of introducing their research in an informal learning experience. In 2018-19, the seminars are "Friendship in Japan: A Cross-Cultural Inquiry" (offered in both semesters), "Korean Hip-Hop: A New Poetic Intervention" (offered in Fall) and "How to Learn a Chinese Dialect" (offered in Spring)
Our Study Abroad Programs: We encourage our students whenever possible to experience East Asia directly through our innovative Study Abroad programs in China, Japan, and Korea.
Our Beijing Summer Chinese Language Program: In this faculty-led program, students can spend six weeks engaged in intensive immersion instruction at China's premier institution for language larning in the heart of the Chinese capital.
Our Graduate Program: The department offers two graduate degrees, a Masters for Teachers of Chinese (MAT), preparing teachers to excel in a variety of K-12 programs throughout the State of New Jersey, and a Master of Arts (MA) in East Asian Languages and Cultures, preparing graduates for a wide range of Asia-related jobs or further graduate study.
Our Faculty: In support of our teaching and research activites, our department's faculty members are thoroughly engaged in academic dialogue and collaboration, including hosting the following scholarly events at Rutgers: International symposium on Buddhist Literacy in Early Modern Vietnam (2016); Annual meeting of the Chinese Medieval Studies Workshop (2012); Annual meeting of the International Linguistic Association (2011); Annual conference of the Chinese Language Teachers Association of Greater New York (2011); and Annual meeting of the Association of Japanese Literary Studies (2009).
Our Speaker Series: The department offers an active schedule each semester of invited speakers in workshops, lecture series, and mini-conferences in Chinese, Japanese, and Korean Studies.
The Rutgers Confucius Institute sponsors many China Studies related events and programs.
The Rutgers East Asian Library has a strong and growing collection of Chinese, Japanese, and Korean language materials.
The Rutgers Library is also expanding the collection of online databases and electronic resources.
Our History: Our department has a long and rich history of exchange with East Asia, and we are currently celebrating two important milestones:
- 1966--Looking back fifty years, we remember the beginnings of our department with the advent of Chinese language courses at Rutgers in 1966, taught by our founding Chair Ching-I Tu, who retired in 2018.
- 1867--Looking back more than 150 years, we remember the earliest group of Japanese exchange students arriving in New Brunswick in 1867 to take up their studies at Rutgers. Among them was Kusakabe Taro, whose untimely death prevented him from graduating with his Rutgers College class in 1870. His grave still stands in Willow Grove Cemetery, New Brunswick, and even today is a destination for visitors from Japan.
Asian Languages and Cultures invites you to explore our department's website, participate in our exciting programs, and to celebrate these important milestones with us!
