Waiyee Li (Harvard University): The Real and the Fake in Seventeenth Century Literature

What do anecdotes, stories, and plays about authenticity and forgery tell us about late Ming aesthetic and literary sensibility and their continuation or transformation in the early Qing? What are the ramifications of glorifying the connoisseur's discernment or of decrying his perfidy and rapacity? How are economic calculations related to aesthetic and moral judgments? This talk will present a preliminary foray into these questions.
