Prospective Students

Meet our Asian Languages and Cultures Majors and Alumni

Majoring in Asian Languages and Cultures prepares you for the future!

In a large research university like Rutgers, students in the Department of Asian Languages and Cultures enjoy the best of both worlds: personal attention in small classes with a liberal arts college atmosphere, coupled with high-level training from our world-class research faculty. We attract a diverse group of students, some studying Chinese, Japanese, or Korean for the first time, others eager to explore their Asian heritage, still others learning to read and write a language they speak at home. No matter what path brings them to the department, most students achieve their goals of mastering an East Asian language and being able to understand, discuss, and write analytically about novels, poetry, film, and pressing issues of international significance.

Our undergraduate program prepares students for a bright future in our globalizing world by providing them with linguistic and cultural fluency in a tradition other than English, and solid training in the humanities through a focus on textual and film analysis, critical thinking and writing, and intercultural interpretation. We offer a B.A. in Asian Studies, B.A. in Chinese, B.A. in Japanese, and B.A. in Korean. A degree in any of our four majors opens the door to many professional graduate schools, including schools of international affairs or diplomacy, as well as careers in education, international business, non-profits and NGOs, journalism, and cutting-edge fields like robotics, machine translation, and artificial intelligence in which East Asia is taking the lead globally.
